Electricity prices in 2024: A steep increase and its causes

The year 2024 marks a turning point for German electricity customers that will hit deep into household budgets. A key factor for the steep rise in electricity prices is the significant increase in network fees. These fees, which are charged for the expansion and use of electricity networks, have in some cases more than doubled.

The original plan called for a government subsidy of 5.5 billion euros to stabilize network fees in order to ease the financial burden on consumers. However, in view of a budget crisis, the federal government decided to completely cancel this subsidy. This elimination of subsidies has a direct impact: network fees and therefore electricity prices are skyrocketing.

Experts and comparison portals unanimously warn about the consequences of this decision. Without financial cushion from the state, households will have to expect network costs in 2024 that will be a third higher than they were two years earlier. The doubling of network fees will lead to a significant increase in electricity bills for end consumers, causing network fees to reach a new all-time high.

Interestingly, without this doubling, electricity customers would have had to pay a net amount of 395 euros (excluding VAT) for using the electricity grid for an annual consumption of 4,000 kilowatt hours. Now, as the green electricity provider LichtBlick calculated, the suppliers have to charge around 170 euros more for the same consumption.

The direct impact on consumers is obvious. According to current information from the comparison portal Verivox, new customers now pay around 30.4 cents per kilowatt hour, while existing customers even pay 39.6 cents. These figures mark a significant increase from the low point in June, which was 28 cents per kilowatt hour. Since then, prices have risen steadily despite slight fluctuations. Since energy companies work with long-term supply contracts, the increase in prices on the electricity exchange is only reflected in consumer tariffs with a time lag.

This development shows that energy costs in Germany continue to pose a challenge. The abrupt increase in network fees and the removal of government subsidies are putting additional strain on consumers. In this context, it is more important than ever to compare electricity tariffs critically and possibly switch to alternative providers in order to save costs. At the same time, the situation highlights the need for a sustainable energy policy that takes into account both the security of supply and the financial resilience of citizens.

Future prospects and consumer tips

Given rising electricity prices, it is becoming increasingly important to take energy efficiency measures. Consumers can significantly reduce their energy costs by using energy-efficient appliances, optimizing their energy consumption and switching to sustainable energy sources such as solar energy. There are also opportunities to control and reduce energy consumption through intelligent electricity tariffs and the use of smart home technologies.

A suitable example of this is solar modules from German manufacturers. Specifically: balcony power plant complete sets , consisting of solar modules , a micro inverter , a DCU measurement and throttling including an app from the manufacturer HERF , as well as various mounting sets that enable individual installation.

The political landscape must respond to these developments by improving the framework conditions for the expansion of renewable energies and creating incentives for energy efficiency and savings. Funding programs for the installation of photovoltaic systems and the renovation of buildings can make an important contribution to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and reducing CO2 emissions.

Conclusion

Ultimately, it is a joint task of politics, business and consumers to shape the path to a sustainable and energy-efficient future. By making informed decisions, investing in green technologies and promoting more conscious energy consumption, each individual can contribute to the success of the energy transition. This is the only way to ensure a safe, clean and affordable energy supply in the long term that meets the needs of future generations.
